Hello! Today's demo lesson is Equivalent fractions. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- A fraction tells us how many equal parts we have. The bottom number (the denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number (the numerator) says how many of those parts we have.
- Equivalent fractions are different-looking fractions that show the same amount. Half a chapati is the same amount as two quarters of it, so 1/2 = 2/4.
- To make an equivalent fraction, multiply the top and the bottom by the same number. For example, 1/2 = (1 × 3)/(2 × 3) = 3/6. Dividing both by the same number works too: 4/8 = 1/2.
