Adding two-digit numbers

Demo tutor
Hello! Today's demo lesson is Adding two-digit numbers. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- A two-digit number is made of tens and ones. 34 is 3 tens and 4 ones.
- To add two numbers, add the ones first, then add the tens. 23 + 14: ones 3 + 4 = 7, tens 2 + 1 = 3. So the answer is 37.
- If the ones add up to 10 or more, make a new ten and carry it to the tens. 28 + 15: ones 8 + 5 = 13, which is 1 ten and 3 ones. Write 3 and carry 1 ten. Tens 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. So 28 + 15 = 43.
