Hello! Today's demo lesson is Subject–verb agreement. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- The subject is who or what the sentence is about. The verb must agree with it: a singular subject takes a singular verb, and a plural subject takes a plural verb.
- In the present tense, a singular subject (he, she, it, one person or thing) usually takes a verb ending in -s: “The girl sings.” A plural subject takes the verb without -s: “The girls sing.” “I” and “you” also take the verb without -s: “I sing.”
- Watch for tricky subjects. “Each”, “everyone” and “nobody” are singular: “Everyone is here.” When a phrase comes between subject and verb, find the real subject: “The box of pencils is on the table” (the box is).
