Adding and subtracting integers

Hello! Today's demo lesson is Adding and subtracting integers. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative or zero: …, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, … Negative numbers are used for things like temperatures below zero or money owed.
- On a number line, adding a positive number moves you right and adding a negative number moves you left. Start at −2 and add 5: move 5 steps right to reach 3. So −2 + 5 = 3.
- Subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. 4 − 7 = 4 + (−7) = −3. And 3 − (−2) = 3 + 2 = 5.
