Hello! Today's demo lesson is Solving simple equations. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- An equation says that two things are equal, like x + 5 = 12. The letter x stands for an unknown number. Solving the equation means finding that number.
- Think of an equation as a balanced weighing scale. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side to keep it balanced.
- To get x on its own, undo what has been done to it. In x + 5 = 12, 5 was added, so subtract 5 from both sides: x = 7. In 3x = 21, x was multiplied by 3, so divide both sides by 3: x = 7. Always check: 7 + 5 = 12 ✓.
