Photosynthesis: how plants make food

Hello! Today's demo lesson is Photosynthesis: how plants make food. Here is the big idea, one step at a time:
- Green plants make their own food by a process called photosynthesis. “Photo” means light and “synthesis” means putting together.
- Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores called stomata. Roots take in water from the soil. Chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves, traps energy from sunlight.
- Using this energy, the plant turns carbon dioxide and water into glucose (a sugar) and releases oxygen. In words: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen, in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Extra glucose is stored as starch.
